Planet der Monster , also Planet der Dinosaurier, (Original title: Planet of the Dinosaurs , also: Planet of Dinosaurs ) is an American science fiction film from 1977 by James K. Shea. The script is based on a story by Jim Aupperle.

action

After a machine failure, the commander of the Odyssey spaceship , Captain Norsythe, is forced to make an emergency landing on an unknown planet. The spaceship is light years away from Earth, and the only way to land is from an Earth-like planet that has an atmosphere. The ship lands in a lake. Communication officer Cindy only notices on land that she has left the radio on board the spaceship. Together with her teammate Chuck, she tries to recover the device, but she is attacked and killed by an unknown marine creature. Chuck escapes to the bank, but without a radio.

The eight surviving crew members set out to explore the unknown planet. The group has two laser weapons, one of which Derna loses. When they encounter a creature that looks like a brontosaurus , they realize that they are stranded on a planet that has life forms similar to Earth, but must be millions of years younger. After Charlotte finds out that the flora, especially the berries, is poisonous and another dinosaur is found, Norsythe decides that the group should retreat to higher regions in the mountains.

During the ascent, Nyla slips and loses all food supplies. In a cave, Baylor, the vice president of the company that owns the Odyssey , discovers a nest full of eggs. After stealing one of the eggs, he is attacked and killed by a Centrosaurus . Norsythe has the remaining group stop at a point that he considers easy to defend. Marine engineer Jim believes they are trapped on the planet. He makes the proposal to found a new civilization. Norsythe, on the other hand, believes in salvation and has the site secured by lining a cave with a palisade.

After further encounters, including a gigantic spider and an allosaurus , a large tyrannosaurus attacks , kills Derna and destroys the palisade. Jim is able to convince the group that it is best to kill the dangerous dinosaur. Norsythe suggests using the corpse of a Polacanthus as bait and smearing the poisonous berries on it. But the tyrannosaurus attacks the group from behind and kills another group member, Mike. Jim's plan is to stick long, pointed poles in the ground, soak their tips with the berry poison and lure the dinosaur into the poles. The plan works, even if Jim is almost killed.

Years go by, the group now makes a living from farming. Chuck and Charlotte had a son. Charlotte wonders if they'll ever be saved, leading Nyla to comment that it doesn't matter anymore.
