Platinum (II) chloride is one of several chlorides of the chemical element platinum . There are also platinum (IV) chloride and the mixed compound platinum (II, IV) chloride PtCl 3 , which consists of platinum (II) and platinum (IV) chloride. It is a green solid at room temperature .
Extraction and presentation
Platinum (II) chloride is formed from the elements at 550 ° C.
It can also be produced by decomposing platinum (IV) chloride or hexachloroplatinic acid at 360 ° C or by evaporating hydrochloric acid (only stable in solution) tetrachloroplatinic acid H 2 [PtCl 4 ] solutions in vacuo. The reduction of hexachloroplatinic acid with hydrazine and subsequent thermal treatment at 150 ° C is also possible:
properties
Platinum (II) chloride occurs in two modifications , the black-red high-temperature modification α-PtCl 2 , which is stable above 500 ° C, and the green β-modification, which is more stable at lower temperatures. β-PtCl 2 crystallizes in a hexagonal crystal structure , with α-PtCl 2 corner and edge-linked PtCl 4 units are assumed.
