Pod People is an Australian stoner-doom band from Canberra , which was founded in 1993, disbanded in 2011 and has been active again since 2014.

history

The band was formed in 1993 and consisted of drummer Adrian, guitarists Paul Carey and Ivan, bassist Duncan and singer Brad Nicholson. After a self-titled EP in 1995, all members except Nicholson left the cast. Towards the end of the year a new line-up came together. Dave Drynan started as the new bass player, then the line-up was supplemented by drummer Maggot "Maggs" McFly and guitarists Mel Walker and Josh Nixon. In 1996 the group was to be seen at the Metal for the Brain and in later years was represented even more often at this festival (at times four years in a row), so that it is one of the most frequently represented groups there. In 1998 the EP Swingin 'Beef was released . This was followed by appearances together with Entombed and Brutal Truth . In 1999 the next EP Soil followed, from which the song Goin 'South for the sampler Full Metal Racket by Triple J was selected. In 2000, the recording of the debut album began. Originally called Ascent of Glamstonia , it was released in 2002 - after the band had signed a recording deal with High Beam Music the year before - after several delays under the name Doom Saloon . The group had spent most of 2001 inactive, as McFly was ill and had undergone an operation and Nicholson had gone on a world tour by winning a competition. After the album was released, two performances were held with Cathedral . After the debut album had been sent to Lee Dorrian , it was licensed internationally in 2004 on his label Rise Above Records . In 2005, the split release In the End appeared together with Daredevil . In October and November Electric Wizard went on a tour through Australia. After that, work on the next album began, while concerts were occasionally given. In 2007 she performed with Nunchukka Superfly , Celtic Frost and Blood Duster, among others . In August 2008 the second album Mons Animae Mortuorum was released . After further occasional appearances and tours, the band broke up in 2011 after the Bastardfest festival tour. The group has been active again since 2014.

style

According to Brian Giffin in his Encyclopedia of Australian Heavy Metal , the band is one of the longest-serving Australian Doom Metal bands. Initially still playing stoner rock , these influences continued to decline from 1996 and gave way to Doom Metal in the style of Pentagram , Cathedral and Goatsnake . Uwe “Buffo” Schnädelbach from Rock Hard assigned Doom Saloon to Doom Metal, although this is even more difficult to digest than that of the genre colleagues. The songs contain death metal elements, black sabbath riffs stoner rock borrowings in the style of Kyuss as well as psychedelic passages. The singing consists of “grunting”, “gurgling” and “rattling”. Overall, he gave Candlemass , Count Raven , the first two Trouble albums and the classic Black Sabbath albums as references. The album was also reviewed on schwermetall.ch . Influences like Kyuss and Black Sabbath are omnipresent, but they also work in “ Death Rock and bluesy- dark, psychedelic influences” and an occasional slide into Death Metal is also noticeable, so that one also feels reminded of The Melvins . The group cannot be compared to a Doom Metal band like My Dying Bride , but rather can be described as a groovy and “doomy” variant of Entombed in the times of Wolverine Blues . The singing is sometimes guttural , sometimes clear.
