Pierre Antoine Poiteau
Pierre Antoine Poiteau (born March 23, 1766 in Ambleny near Soissons , † February 27, 1854 in Paris ) was a French botanist , pomologist , gardener and draftsman. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Poit. "
Live and act
In 1790 he got a job at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris . He traveled to Haiti from 1796 and to Guiana around 1820 . He was director of the Haiti Botanical Garden from 1796–1802. In 1815 he became head of the royal tree nursery at Versailles. He oversaw the royal plantations in Guiana from 1818. He later became head gardener at Fontainebleau and at the Botanical Garden of the Paris Medical School. He brought many plants back from his travels. He also published a Flora of Haiti and a Flora Parisiensis with Pierre Jean François Turpin . From 1829 to 1851 he headed the magazine Revue horticole .
As a draftsman he provided many excellent illustrations for other people's works.
Honors
The genus Poitea Vent. from the legume family (Fabaceae) is named after him. The pear variety 'Neue Poiteau', raised from seeds by Simon Bouvier in Jodoigne, Belgium, is named after him.
