Pola Sieverding's works question traditional concepts of gender, culture and normality by dealing with both specific social places and the people living in them. Sieverding's works primarily analyze the relationship between individuals and their bodies, ranging from women in traditional Islamic clothing to drag queens and from performance artists to the Berlin club scene. In recent years the artist has expanded her work to include photographs of equally characteristic architecture, which can be understood as portraits of specific social spaces. Her work pervades a special sense of materiality: be it the concrete or glass surfaces in her films like Close to Concrete I and II, the hair in To The Crowned And Conquering Child or the different textiles in the photo series Text I-VI. In cooperation with Orson Sieverding, the artist is developing electronic sound tracks for her videos that project the sounds of the city onto the bodies of their protagonists and transform them into urban echoes.

Scholarships

Sieverding has already received two grants from the Berlin Senate , the NaFöG grant in 2008 and the work grant in 2014. In 2011 Sieverding was invited as artist in residence at the Meet Factory in Prague , Maumaus in Lisbon and as a visiting professor at the International Art Academy in Ramallah, Palestine , where she received a scholarship from the Anna Lindh Foundation.
