Portachuelo is a small town in the Santa Cruz department in the lowlands of the South American Andean state Bolivia . The city was founded on December 8, 1770.

Location in the vicinity

Portachuelo is the seat of the administration of the province of Sara and the central place of the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Portachuelo . The city is located in the southern part of the Sara province at an altitude of 301  m on the left bank of the Río Piraí at the mouth of the Río Guendá .

Fifteen kilometers east of Portachuelo , on the other side of the Río Piraí , is Montero , the capital of the Obispo Santistevan province , a city of almost 100,000 inhabitants.

Portachuelo is located in the humid tropical climate off the eastern edge of the Andes mountain range of the Cordillera Oriental . The region was covered by tropical rainforest before colonization , but is now largely cultivated land .

From Santa Cruz, the paved highway Ruta 4 leads via Warnes and Montero to Portachuelo, and from there a further 398 kilometers in a westerly direction to Cochabamba and another 376 kilometers to Tambo Quemado on the Chilean border.
