Obispo Santistevan (also: Santiesteban ) is a province in the northwestern part of the Santa Cruz department in the lowlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

The province was founded on December 2, 1941 and commemorates the bishop ( Spanish Obispo ) of Santa Cruz José Belisario Santistevan Seoane (1843–1931), the promoter of the construction of the cathedral of Santa Cruz de la Sierra .

location

The province is one of fifteen provinces in the Santa Cruz Department. It borders in the northwest with the province of Ichilo , in the southwest with the province Sara , in the southeast with the province Ignacio Warnes , in the east with the province Ñuflo de Chávez , and in the northeast with the province Guarayos . The capital of the province is the city of Montero with 107,294 inhabitants ( 2012 census ).

It extends between 16 ° 02 'and 17 ° 24' south latitude and 63 ° 02 'and 64 ° 15' west longitude. Its length from northwest to southeast is 280 kilometers, its mean width 45 kilometers, it has a size of 3673 square kilometers. The border between the province and the neighboring provinces in the east and northeast is the Río Grande .

The population of Obispo Santistevan Province has increased by more than three quarters over the past two decades:

44.7 percent of the population are younger than 15 years. 98.2 percent of the population speak Spanish , 27.6 percent Quechua , 1.9 percent Aymara and 1.2 percent Guaraní .

35.5 percent of the population have no access to electricity , 34.2 percent live without sanitary facilities (1992).

86.5 percent of the population are Catholic , 9.8 percent are Protestant (1992).
