Manuel María Caballero is a province in the western part of the Santa Cruz Department in the lowlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia . The province bears its name in honor of the Deputy Manuel María Caballero of Vallegrande , who co-signed the Bolivian constitution (Constitución política) of August 5, 1861.

location

The province is bordered to the west by the department of Cochabamba , to the south by the province of Vallegrande , to the east by the province of Florida , and to the northeast by the province of Ichilo .

The population of the province of Caballero has increased by almost half in the past two decades:

  • 1992 : 16,074 inhabitants ( census )
  • 2001 : 20,010 inhabitants (census)
  • 2012 : 23,267 inhabitants (census)

The urban population made up 20.0 percent (1992). 44.9 percent of the population are younger than 15 years (1992).

95.4 percent of the population speak Spanish , 43.8 percent Quechua , and 1.6 percent Aymara (1992).

60.7 percent of the workforce work in agriculture , 0.2 percent in mining , 5.1 percent in industry , 34.0 percent in the service sector (2001).

90.1 percent of the population are Catholic , 8.4 percent are Protestant (1992).

70.1 percent of the population have no access to electricity , 70.8 percent live without sanitary facilities (1992).
