Portsmouth is a small town in Newport County , in the southeast of the US state Rhode Island on the island of the same name in Narragansett Bay . Dyer Island is also part of the urban area .
geography
Portsmouth is on the northern tip of the island of Rhode Island. The metropolitan area includes several islands in addition to part of Rhode Island, including Prudence Island, Patience Island , Hope Island and Hog Island. It has an area of 153.6 km², more than half of which consists of water. The mean height of Portsmouth is 43 m.
The settlement area is mainly concentrated on the east coast of the island. The west of the city area is predominantly rural and shaped by the precincts of the city by the Rhode Iceland State Route 24 separately. The State Route is the main route over the Sakonnet Bridge to Fall River on the eastern mainland in Massachusetts . The northern mainland is accessible via State Route 114 and Mount Hope Bridge . The 114 also connects to Newport in the south of the island. A ferry service runs from the west coast of the urban area via Prudence Island to Bristol .

In the 2000 census , 17,149 inhabitants were counted. Almost 96% of the population were white , the remainder was distributed among different ethnic groups. The per capita income was $ 28,161; 3.4% of the population lived below the poverty line .
history
The city was founded in 1638 by Anne Hutchinson as the second European settlement in what is now Rhode Island. Fishing and shipbuilding played a major role in the city's economic life. In the 19th century, coal mining was also important.
