Offutts Crossroads was a small settlement for farmers and travelers. The first tavern opened in 1820. During the American Civil War, the local infrastructure grew. Confusingly similar settlement names led to the renaming of the area in "Potomac" by the civil war veteran John McDonald in 1880.
