Poul August Plum (born May 13, 1815 in Copenhagen , † July 27, 1876 in Fredensborg on Zealand ) was a Danish genre painter .

Life

Plum, son of the captain and customs officer Hans Jacob Plum (1783–1835) and his wife Petra Magdalene, née Halse (1786–1864), attended the Royal Danish Academy of Art from 1831 to 1838 . There he was a student of Johann Ludwig Lund . From 1839 to 1841 he stayed in North America . From 1845 to 1847 he took part in a circumnavigation on the Danish corvette Galathea . In doing so, he created drawings and studies that are considered to be one of the few Danish examples of orientalism of the time. On the island of Hawaii he painted portraits of King Kamehameha III in October 1846 . and his wife Kalama. Between 1850 and 1853 he stayed in Düsseldorf , also in Belgium and Paris . In 1857 he was a member of the artists' association Malkasten . In 1858 he married Mariane Laurentze Hasse (1812–1872), and in 1873 Emilie Hoppe (1836–1916).
