The Pourquoi Pas? ( German : Why not? ) is a research ship that was built in Saint-Nazaire by STX France for the French marine research institute Ifremer and the French Navy .

It is in the service of the Genavir Institute . With its name, the ship follows the tradition of the ships of the same name by polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot . The Pourquoi Pas? 55% is used by Ifremer and 45% by the Navy, about 150 days a year for the Navy and 180 days for Ifremer.

Technical specifications

The propulsion of the ship takes place diesel electrically by two Alstom -electric each with 1650  kW power , the two variable pitch drive. Four diesel generator sets, each with an output of 1,469 kW (1,836  kVA apparent power ) and a diesel generator set with 300 kW output (375 kVA apparent power) are available for power generation.

equipment

The ship can be used for tasks in the field of hydrography , deep sea and coastal fishing, geosciences, for physical, chemical and biological operations in oceanography and for the implementation of the scientific goals of the institute. It is equipped either with the deep-sea submarine Nautile , the remote-controlled deep-sea robot Victor 6000 or with towing equipment. It is also available for charter.

A 22-ton crane enables heavy equipment to be handled. There is a helipad at the bow. With a maximum crew of 40 men, the Pourquoi Pas? Spend 60 days at sea.

commitment

Deep sea dive boat Nautile

On June 3, 2009, the Pourquoi Pas? sent to the scene of the accident on Air France flight 447 , which - at the time still undiscovered, the first corpses and parts were not located until June 6 - was located near the uninhabited archipelago of Saint Peter and Saint Paul . There it was supposed to contain the " black box " of the crashed Airbus A330-200 . The equipment on board the ship, especially the deep-sea submarine and the ROV , allow the investigation of up to 97% of the seabed at a depth of up to 6,000 meters.
