Prabha Rau

Prabha Rau (born March 4, 1935 in Khandwa , † April 26, 2010 in Delhi ) was an Indian politician .

Life

Rau studied political science and musicology and graduated with a Master of Arts . In addition, she was active as a track and field athlete and represented the state of Maharashtra at the Indian championships in the disciplines of long jump , high jump , hurdles , discus throwing and sprinting .

She began her political career in 1972 when she was elected for the first time as a candidate for the Indian National Congress (INC) as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Maharashtra (Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha). Later she was also chair of the INC in Maharashtra.

In 1999 she was elected member of the Indian lower house, the Lok Sabha , and represented Wardha constituency there during the 13th legislative period until 2004 .

On July 19, 2008, she was in place of Vishnu Sadashiv Kokje for governor of the state of Himachal Pradesh appointed. When the governor of the state of Rajasthan , Shailendra Kumar Singh , passed away on December 1, 2009 , she was also Singh's successor the following day.

After she was sworn in on January 25, 2010 as governor of Rajasthan, she handed over the office of governor of Himachal Pradesh to Urmila Singh on the same day . She held the office of governor of Rajasthan until her death from a heart attack on April 26, 2010.
