biography

Singh came from a nationalist family of zamindars from Bulandshahar. His family also has close personal ties to the Nehru Gandhi family ; in particular his son Kanishka Singh was a close friend and also adviser to Rahul Gandhi , the son of Rajiv and Sonia Gandhi . In addition, the family had very close ties with the influential Scindia dynasty .

SK Singh himself completed his education at the Pathshala ( Hindi Medium School ) and at St. John's College in Agra and then studied the Persian language and international law at Trinity College of the University of Cambridge .

After completing his studies, he entered the diplomatic service and worked, among other things, at the embassy in Iran , where, in addition to Islam, he also dealt with further learning the Persian language.

In 1985 he was appointed ambassador to Pakistan , where he served the longest term of an Indian representative in Islamabad until 1989. During his tenure there, he was instrumental in the visit of the then President of Pakistan Mohammed Zia ul-Haq to Jaipur as a guest at a cricket match between the Indian and Pakistani national cricket teams. This cricket diplomacy, which he initiated, ultimately contributed to calming the crisis between the two states and to a more moderate stance on the part of the then Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi towards the neighboring state.

Prime Minister Vishwanath Pratap Singh then appointed him State Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs . However, there were differences between the two, so that SK Singh was soon dismissed from this office. He later worked as an ambassador to Afghanistan .

On December 16, 2004, he became governor of Arunachal Pradesh .

When he was appointed Governor of Rajasthan on September 6, 2007 , his appointment was warmly welcomed by the then Chief Minister of the State of Vasundhara Raje . During his tenure there was the adoption of the law on freedom of religion ( Religious Freedom Bill ) and the Law on the Gujjar reservations ( Gujjar Reservation Bill ). The government of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by V. Raje came as a surprise when Singh made a report to the Union government in New Delhi about large land purchases in border regions . There was a good working relationship between him and Raje's successor as Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot . He stood up for the culture of the state and was particularly popular because he paid expenses for family celebrations such as the wedding of his son Kanishka Singh, unlike his predecessors such as Om Prakash Mehra or M. Chenna Reddy, from his personal wealth. He held the office of governor of Rajasthan until his death.

Shailendra Kumar Singh was the third governor of the state to die in office after Darbara Singh and Nirmal Chandra Jain .
