The five friends Alison DiLaurentis, Aria Montgomery, Emily Fields, Hanna Marin and Spencer Hastings are having a nightly slumber party together when Alison disappears without a trace. A year later, the remaining four went their separate ways. Aria has just returned from Iceland , where she had spent the last year with her family. She cannot forgive her father for an affair - of which only she knows - with one of his students. She meets Ezra Fitz in a bar, and the two quickly get closer; however, the next day he turns out to be her English teacher. Hanna is meanwhile the new It-Girl of the school and goes shoplifting together with Mona, which finally gets her into trouble and forces her mother to sleep with Detective Darren Wilden. Spencer has since become even more focused on her school and developed feelings for Wren, her sister's fiancé, while Emily quickly becomes friends with Maya St. Germain, who recently moved into Alison's house. The four girls soon receive mysterious messages from a person named "A" who knows all of her secrets. For this reason, they believe "A" is Alison until shortly afterwards Alison's body is found in the garden of Maya's house. Jenna - a classmate who is blinded by an accident - also appears at the funeral service. After the funeral service, they get another message from "A": I'm still there, you sluts. And I know everything .

On the evening after the funeral service, the girls meet to deal with the death of their friend Alison. The next day Jenna goes back to school, which reminds the girls of Jenna's accident. A flashback shows how they and Alison threw something into Jenna's stepbrother Toby's garage, but did not notice that Jenna was inside. Jenna is blinded by a bright flash of light and then moved away. Meanwhile, Aria asks Ezra's class to be transferred, but her request is denied. Later the two get closer in his car. Her father tries to resolve their differences with success. After Melissa watches a kiss between Spencer and Wren, Melissa breaks off her engagement to Wren. Detective Wilden does not leave the girls - especially Hanna and her mother - in peace and begins his investigation into the murder of Alison. Since Maya's house has become a crime scene and a memorial to Alison due to the corpse, she moves in with Emily for a few days. Emily develops more than friendship for Maya, which makes her feel guilty because she has a boyfriend named Ben.

The girls block all incoming messages and e-mails from unfamiliar numbers in order to block “A”. But "A" then finds other ways to make life difficult for them. After a long time, Hanna meets her father again for dinner, where he introduces her to his new fiancée Isabel and her daughter Kate. After talking to Ezra, Aria tries to tell her mother about her father's affair, but "A" has already taken care of it for her. Emily still struggles with her feelings for Maya, which is made worse by "A". Meanwhile, Spencer's essay, which she copied from Melissa, is submitted for the Golden Orchid - a prestigious award in historical literature. Finally, it turns out that "A" is not so easy to stop when she broke into Spencer's house and left a clear message on a mirror for them.

Emily unexpectedly befriends Toby, which she keeps a secret from her friends.

The homecoming ball is imminent and in order to get some distraction the girls want to attend until they get a new message from "A" announcing that she will be at the ball too. While Aria is walking alone, Hanna comes with Sean, Spencer with Alex, a boy from the tennis club, and Emily with Toby, which her friends dislike. Maya is also at the ball because she was invited by Hanna, who knows about the kiss between her and Emily. At the ball, Aria meets Ezra, who believes she has never told anyone about their affair, but cannot imagine a future together. When Hanna tries to steal Jenna's file from the psychotherapist, she finds Toby's file instead. From these files they learn that Toby was in a relationship with her before Jenna's accident, even though she is his half-sister. Knowing about it, Alison blackmailed him with it. They conclude that this was why Toby had a motive for hating them all.

Eventually Toby's damaged motorcycle is found and "A" thanks Emily for getting Toby out of the way for him.

The girls plan a memorial service for Alison, which Alison's older brother Jason is attending. Aria lets Hanna persuade her to go on a double date with Sean and Noel Kahn, during which the two get closer. Emily invites Maya on a date to the cinema, where they kiss passionately. Due to financial problems, Hanna's credit card is withdrawn, so she is auctioning off some of her bags - with the help of Lucas - over the Internet. Jason complains to Detective Wilden about the results of the investigation so far, whereupon he mentions that Alison had been called by Toby on the night of her death. At the memorial service, the girls and Jenna each give a speech. The night after the celebration, Alison's memorial in the park is destroyed by an unknown person.

Just as the girls are about to take the SAT test at school , a violent storm is sweeping over Rosewood, so that no one is allowed to leave the school building and the test is canceled. When Noel asks Aria out on a date, Ezra reappears. Detective Wilden finds a few statues from Alison's memorial and a letter from Emily to Alison in Emily's pocket, accusing Emily of destroying and killing Alison's memorial. It turns out that Emily had feelings for Alison, but she did not reciprocate them. Spencer learns from her mother that she secretly had a tumor removed from her breast some time ago. Finally, Lucas tries to say something important to Hanna. You can see his dirty shoes, which indicates that he destroyed Alison's memorial.

Spencer makes out with Alex until her mother Veronica shows up. The two break up at the end of the episode. Aria informs Ezra that Noel left the message on the car. After class, Noel blackmailed Fitz with his knowledge of the relationship with Aria in order to get an A. At the same time, Mona is planning a "welcome home" party for Hanna as an apology for being harsh towards her before the birthday party, which has several incidents. "A" steals Ashley's money during the party and Toby is released from prison with an ankle cuff.

Aria's father tells his children at breakfast that their mother is dating other men. Mike informs his family that Noel said Ezra was sleeping with a student. Aria then goes to Fitz and tells him about it. Noel continues to blackmail Ezra. Security then discovers stolen test answers placed in his locker through an "A". To get her mother's money back, Hanna has to follow “A” s instructions. She is supposed to pick up an order for “Fette Hanna” from the bakery. She remembers how Alison used to tease her about being overweight. Hanna gives her mother back the money that she “won”. Pam, who previously displaced Maya through her intolerant behavior, discovers drugs in her left bag. Maya is then sent to a rehabilitation camp. Spencer approaches Tobi and talks to him.

The girls examine "A" 's video that documents the final moments before Alison's disappearance. It turns out that Alison was at "Kissing Rock" with Ian. To end the financial crisis for Hanna and her mother, the blonde looks for a job and finds out that her mother has high debts. At the same time, “A” offers Hanna money for an order via a short message. Meanwhile, Ella tries to couple Aria's literary role model with Ezra and offers her a visiting professor chair in Fitz's class. Emily uses Caleb's help to call Maya in the camp. During lunch, the girls discover that Spencer's laptop, on which the film was for the police, has disappeared. They immediately suspect Ian for having access to the dressing rooms as a coach. During the dance event at the school, Hanna is supposed to dance with Lucas in order to receive money from "A". After the school event, everyone wants to spend the night at Spencer's, where they can find the laptop. The video is deleted.
