The Pride of Kent is a 1992 as a freight ferry under the name European Highway posed into service ferry of the shipping company P & O Ferries . It has been in service on the Dover to Calais route since 2003 .

history

The European Highway was built as one of four sister ships under the shipyard number 1077 at Schichau Seebeckwerft AG in Bremerhaven and launched on December 14, 1991. The delivery to P&O Ferries took place on June 12, 1992. Four days later, the European Highway was put into service on the route from Dover to Zeebrugge . The ship's capacity at that time was 220 passengers.

In March 1998 the ship was chartered to the Stena Line and from May 1999 was used for a short time on the route from Dover to Calais, before it returned to its old service in November 1999.

In December 2002, the European Highway was converted into a passenger ferry at Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven and renamed Pride of Kent in April 2003 . On June 14, 1992, the ship began service from Dover to Calais, where it is still used today.

On the morning of December 10, 2017, the Pride of Kent, with 313 passengers and crew members, ran into a sandbank in strong winds off Calais and had to be pulled free with the help of a tug. The ferry service in Calais was stopped for several hours before the ship could anchor in the port in the early evening. The incident caused slight damage to the ferry, which had to be repaired in the dry dock.

Sister ships

The sister ships Pride of Canterbury and Pride of Burgundy were also converted into passenger ferries from 2002 to 2003 and then used on the route from Dover to Calais. The European Seaway is the only ship in its class that has not been converted and can carry a maximum of 200 passengers.
