Primaria (Original title: ¡Primaria ! , Spanish for “ elementary school !”) Is a Spanish film by Iván Noel from 2010. It is Noel's third film; Noel is again active as a director, screenwriter and composer, with Francisco Alfonsín in the lead for the third time .

action

The trained art teacher José Maria accepts a job in a primary school in Seville . There he has to deal with difficult students as well as difficult colleagues. The hyperactive boy José Joaquín, called “JJ”, with whom most teachers have difficulties, deserves special attention ; However, José Maria notes that the boy calms down when he engages in art.

In the course of the school year, José Maria slowly becomes master of the chaos in the class, also with the help of the dedicated class teacher Idoia. However, his often daring teaching topics such as Dalí's Big Masturbator or Picasso's Guernica cause displeasure with the director Mercedes, who thinks she is inappropriate for a primary school. She also criticizes his overly generous grades. Nevertheless, she gives him responsibility for organizing the theater performance at the end of school.

José Maria continues to take care of JJ and gets closer to his mother. Meanwhile, the teacher Angustias, who has been teaching at the school for 27 years, is increasingly showing her bitterness, which she allows to flow into the lessons and thus scares the students. Mercedes loses patience and then dismisses Angustias. The teacher Lourdes, who has also taken on the role of school psychologist, deals with the case of the girl Veronica, who attracts attention because she masturbates (as a form of stress management) during class.

In the end-of-school theater performance, which deals with Nordic mythology , José Maria transfers backstage coordination to JJ. When JJ fails to control his hyperactivity, the performance ends in chaos, but a successful performance by the boy Carlos with a magic trick ensures a successful conclusion. Finally, José Maria organizes a public exhibition with the pictures taken by his students during the year. In the end he accompanies JJ and his mother home.

Creation and publication

The film was shot entirely at the San Francisco de Paula School in Seville, where the director taught himself for a year; Primaria thus reconstructs Noel's own experiences in school in a semi-documentary manner. Filming took place within ten days during the summer vacation and involved Noel's own students. The work was financed with the help of sponsors, Noel later put the budget at around $ 60,000. It is the first feature film in Spain to be shot with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR camera, which was new at the time . The director described Primaria as his answer to the French film Entre les murs ; together with the two previous films Where were you? and Brecha he forms the childhood trilogy ( trilogía sobre la infancia ).

At the Tokyo International Film Festival 2010 Primaria was represented in the competition, the film was also in the selection of the Metro Manila Film Festival and was shown at the Mar del Plata International Film Festival . Like its predecessors, Noel published the film on YouTube for free with English subtitles , and on his website he offers self-produced DVDs with bonus material and optional French subtitles. In Germany cmv-Laservision released the film in 2014 as the fourth Noel film ( Vuelve - Come back! Was released in 2013) on DVD with German subtitles.
