Priscilla Welch

Priscilla Welch ( Priscilla June "Cilla" Welch, née Mayes ; born November 22, 1944 in Bedford ) is a former British marathon runner .

Before she started running as a member of the British Army at the age of 35 , she was unsportsmanlike and smoker . In 1980 she was under three hours for the first time, and in 1983 she finished tenth in the London Marathon , won the Enschede Marathon and came third in the New York City Marathon . The following year she was sixth in the Osaka Women's Marathon and second in London. A sixth place in the premiere of the Olympic Women's Marathon at the Los Angeles Games was followed by a victory in the Columbus Marathon .

In 1985 she was fourth in the Pittsburgh Marathon as well as in Columbus and fifth in New York City and in 1986 third in the Chicago Marathon . In 1987, a sixth place in the Nagoya Marathon was followed by a second place in London. Her time of 2:26:51 h was not only a British record, but also a world record for the W40 age group, which lasted until 2008. In the fall, she became the oldest ever winner in New York City. In 1988 she finished fourth and in 1989 seventh in the Boston Marathon .

A breast cancer that began in 1992 her sports career ended.

Priscilla Welch was trained by her husband, Dave, whom she met in the British Army. The couple moved to Boulder, Colorado before the 1984 Olympics and later lived in Bend, Oregon until Dave died in 2006 .
