Enschede marathon
The Enschede Marathon is the second oldest marathon in Europe. It has been held in Enschede since 1947 (every two years until 1991, annually since then). It has been held in April since 2005. Until 2009, the route ran over both Dutch and German territory. The competition also includes a half marathon , a 10 km and a 5 km run.
history
The run was initiated by the journalist Gerard Kraemer, then chairman of the Twente district in the Royal Netherlands Athletics Union (KNAU), who in 1946 held an international competition on the sidelines of the European Athletics Championships in Oslo with the organizer of the Košice marathon Vojtek Bukovsky Netherlands - Czechoslovakia agreed. This took place the following year on July 12, 1947, and sprint legend Fanny Blankers-Koen presented the winner with a wreath.
From then on, the race took place every two years and attracted top international runners. In 1949 Jack Holden won in 2:20:52 h, a world class time, even if you take into account that this year the route was a good two kilometers shorter than the standard distance of 42.195 km. In 1953, the Briton Jim Peters was the first runner to achieve a time below 2:20 on a route that was not designed as a point-to-point course.
In 1992 the run was changed to an annual cycle and the race was renamed the Twente Marathon . He kept this name until 2000. In 1999, the route was first run across German territory. The following year the race had to be canceled after an explosion in a fireworks factory devastated a district that the course crosses.
route
Start and finish is on the HJ van Heekplein in the center of Enschede. The marathon route first leads east via Glanerbrug to the Westphalian city of Gronau and from there returns to Enschede. While the half marathon course leads directly back to the starting point, the marathon course turns north to Lonneker in front of the city center. From there he makes an arc in the west around the city center to the districts south of Rijksweg 35 and from there returns to his starting point.
