The private international association "Pro Deo et fratribus - Family of Mary" ( it . : Associazione "Pro Deo et fratribus - Famiglia di Maria" , abbreviation: PDF - FM) is an international association of believers in the Roman Catholic Church . The clerics of the PDF - FM association are also members of the clerical association of papal law, the “Work of Jesus the High Priest” (Italian: Opera di Gesù Sommo Sacerdote, abbreviation: Opus JSS). The PDF - FM was founded in 1968 and recognized by the Holy See in 2004. It consists of over 60 priests, 30 seminarians and brothers, 200 sisters and families who are at home in eleven countries.

history

The lay movement "Pro fratribus" was at the request of Pope Paul VI. (1963–1978) launched. It has been under the direction of Bishop Paul Maria Hnilica SJ (1921–2006) since 1968 . On August 14, 1992, the movement received episcopal recognition from Bishop Eduard Kojnok (1933–2011) of Rožňava and henceforth called itself “Pro Deo et fratribus - Family of Mary the Co-redeemer”. The Pontifical Council for the Laity issued on 25 March 1995, the recognition of "ad experimentum" ( de. "On trial") as "International private association of the faithful of Pontifical Right with legal person '. On March 25, 2004, the final recognition under the name “Pro Deo et fratribus - Family of Mary” was pronounced and the statutes approved.

For the priests who are members of the PDF - FM, the clerical association "Work of Jesus the High Priest (Opus JSS)" was founded on May 22, 2008 by the Congregation for the Clergy . Its president is the priest Gebhard Paul Maria Sigl , who is known as a staunch admirer of Mary and a charismatic preacher . Opus JSS runs its own formation house for priests near Rome.

The community goes back in part to the suspended priest Joseph Seidnitzer , who after several stays in prison for abuse offenses founded a lay community in 1973, to which also priests belonged ("community priestly work"). In 1990 a part of the movement distanced itself from Seidnitzer and submitted to Bishop Hnilica, which led to final ecclesiastical recognition. Seidnitzer retired and died in 1993.

Self-image

Although both associations are based on different foundations under canon law , they share the founding charism . Through their common spirituality , common apostolic goals and missionary works, they form a single work. The spirituality of the association is shaped by the special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary , the eucharistic- priestly spirit and the loyalty and obedience to the Pope. It is missionary- oriented and strives for a return of other Christian denominations to the suzerainty of the Pope, referring to the biblical quotation of the one “flock under one shepherd” ( Jn 10.16  EU ). The pastoral work includes, in consultation with the respective local bishop, pastoral care of parishes , lessons in different schools, the care of children, young people, families and the elderly as well as charitable work in mission stations .

Organization and expansion

The seminarians receive their training in shaping the house of Jesus' work of the high priest in a two-year Vorseminars and the philosophical and theological studies at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome. The apostolic sisters of PDF - FM complete at least three years of training and formation in the mother house in Slovakia . The end of the formation time is the solemn promise made by the Evangelical Councils before the bishop. Whenever possible, the brothers or sisters live in their respective communities or as individuals. PDF - FM has around 280 brothers and sisters, they are based in eight countries in Europe , two countries in Asia and in one country in South America . After the collapse of the communist sphere of influence in the 1990s, the first missionaries went to Slovakia, Russia and Kazakhstan at the request of Pope John Paul II (1978-2005) . Missionary work in Germany , the Czech Republic and Uruguay followed . The bimonthly magazine "Triumph des Herzens" is published in German, Italian, French, English, Dutch and Slovak.
