Panama City in the Panama Province

The province of Panamá is one of ten provinces in the Republic of Panama of the same name in Central America . The capital of the province and the capital of the state is Panama City . With a population of 1.7 million, it was by far the most populous province in the country.

The province lies on the Pacific coast on the Gulf of Panama and is bordered to the west by the Panama Canal .

The economic center of the province is the capital Panama City and the port city of Balboa on the Panama Canal. The province of Panama also includes the archipelago of the Pearl Islands ( Spanish : Archipiélago de las Perlas ), which corresponds to the Balboa district and is now a popular travel destination.

The province of Panamá is in turn divided into six districts ( distritos ) with a total of 55 corregimientos .

With effect from January 1, 2014, the five districts to the west of the Panama Canal were separated and a tenth province - Panamá Oeste - was formed.
