The Prva liga SR Yugoslavije 1996/97 was the fifth season of the top division of BR Yugoslavia . The game was played from August 10, 1996 to May 31, 1997.

Defending champion was FK Partizan Belgrade .

The league was reduced to twelve clubs. These competed against each other in three rounds, so that 33 game days had to be completed. The teams that finished in the first six places after 22 games had one more home game than the teams in the bottom six places.

The last two were relegated directly, the third last had to go into relegation.
