Puerto Rico is a town in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Puerto Rico is the central place of the canton of Puerto Rico in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) La Asunta in the Sud Yungas province . The village is located at an altitude of 666  m on the left bank of the Río Boopi , which forms from the Río de la Paz , which flows from La Paz from a south-westerly direction , and drains to the Río Beni .

Puerto Rico lies on the eastern slopes of the Bolivian Cordillera Central between the Andes mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera de Cocapata in the east.

Infrastructure

Puerto Rico is located at a distance of 232 kilometers by road northeast of La Paz , the capital of the department of the same name.

From La Paz, the paved road Ruta 3 leads sixty kilometers eastwards over the La Cumbre pass to Unduavi , from where the Ruta 25 branches off , which continues as a dirt road in a south-easterly direction for seventy kilometers to Chulumani . From there an unpaved road continues north via Tajma and Choquechaca and after about sixty kilometers it reaches La Asunta , from where it continues downstream along the Río Boopi via Cotapata to Puerto Rico .
