Purén Fortress |
Purén is a municipality in the " little south " of the Andean state of Chile . It lies on its north-western border in the north of the IX. Region ( Araucanía ), just a few kilometers from the regional border with the province of Arauco , Región del Bío-Bío . The city is located on a plain that is on the eastern side of the coastal mountain range ( called Nahuelbuta by the Mapuche ).
history
Purén means "land of swamps " in the Mapuche language . It was a place of strong local resistance against the Spanish colonial empire during the Arauco War .
In 1553 a small military place was built on the place called "San Juan Bautista" ( John the Baptist ). In 1868 the Chilean army built a fortress on the outskirts of the village. The following year, Colonel Cornelio Saavedra Rodríguez ordered the establishment of the village.
The village received Swiss immigrants during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They contributed to urban and agricultural development; In addition, they opened a fig coffee factory in South America .
