Putoranite is a very rare mineral from the mineral class of sulfides and sulfosalts . It crystallizes in the cubic crystal system with the chemical composition Cu 16-18 (Fe, Ni) 18-19 S 32 and rarely forms crystals , mostly brass-colored grains up to 0.1 mm in size, which are fused with Mooihoekite .

Etymology and history

The mineral was found for the first time in 1980 by AA Filimonowa, TL Evstigneewa and IP Laputina in Russia at Talnach, located on the northwestern edge of the Putorana Mountains (since 2004 part of the southwestern Norilsk ) in the Oktyabr mining area . They named it after the mountains.

classification

In the Strunz system , putoranite is classified among the sulfides and sulfosalts. It is counted among the sulphides with a ratio of metal to sulfur, selenium or tellurium of 1: 1. In the eighth edition , it formed a group with haycockite , isocubanite , mooihoekite , orickite , talnakhite and wilhelmramsayit . In the ninth edition , the sulfides are also subdivided into cations, where putoranite with chalcopyrite , eskebornite , haycockite, laforêtite , lenaite , mooihoekite, gallite , roquesite and talnakhite forms a subgroup of metal sulfides with a metal to sulfur, selenium or tellurium ratio of 1 : 1 and zinc , iron , copper or silver .

In the systematics of minerals according to Dana , it forms its own subgroup of sulfides - including selenides and tellurides - with the composition Am Bn Xp, with (m + n): p = 1: 1.

Education and Locations

Putoranite forms in copper-nickel deposits. It is associated with mooihoekite, talnakhite, cabriite , cubanite , pentlandite , magnetite , galena , sphalerite , platinum group minerals, silver , alabandite , valleriite , mackinawit , manganese shadlunite and djerfisherite .

In addition to the type locality in Russia, finds are only known from the Dağküplü and Kavak mines near Eskişehir in Turkey .

Crystal structure

Putoranite crystallizes in the cubic crystal system in the space group Pn 3 m with the lattice parameter a = 5.30  Å and three formula units per unit cell .
