Talnakhite is a very rare mineral from the mineral class of sulfides and sulfosalts . It crystallizes in the cubic crystal system with the chemical composition Cu 9 (Fe, Ni) 8 S 16 and forms narrow, up to two millimeters long, slat-shaped, yellow crystals that are usually fused with other copper - iron sulfides.
Etymology and history
The mineral was first found in 1968 by IA Bud'ko and EA Kulagow in the Severniy mine near Talnach near Norilsk in Russia . They named it after the place where it was found Talnach (English Talnakh).
classification
In the Strunz system , talnakhite is classified as sulfides and sulfosalts. It is counted among the sulphides with a ratio of metal to sulfur, selenium or tellurium of 1: 1. In the eighth edition , it formed a group with haycockite , isocubanite , mooihoekite , orickite , putoranite and wilhelmramsayite . In the ninth edition , the sulfides are also subdivided according to cations, where talnakhite and chalcopyrite , eskebornite , haycockite, laforêtite , lenaite , mooihoekite, gallite , roquesite and putoranite form a subgroup of metal sulfides with a ratio of metal to sulfur, selenium or tellurium of 1 : 1 and zinc , iron , copper or silver .
In the systematics of minerals according to Dana , which is mainly used in the English-speaking world , it forms a subgroup of sulfides - including selenides and tellurides - with haycockite and mooihoekite with the composition Am Bn Xp, with (m + n): p = 1: 1.
Education and Locations
Talnakhite forms in high concentrations under hydrothermal conditions. The mineral also forms under water in black smokers . It is associated with chalcopyrite , cubanite , djerfisherite , pentlandite , vallerite or mackinawit , magnetite , silver - gold and palladium - lead alloys.
So far, 19 locations of the Talnakite are known. In addition to its type locality and other finds in Russia, Talnakhit was found in Suichang in China , Kittilä and Sodankylä in Finland , Laurion in Greece , Takahashi , Kaminokuni and Hidaka in Japan , Cradock and Loolekop in South Africa , Cármenes in Spain and the US states Minnesota , Montana, and Utah .
Crystal structure
Talnakhite crystallizes in the cubic crystal system in the space group I 4 3 m with the lattice parameter a = 10.59 Å and two formula units per unit cell .
