The Río Putumayo , in Quechua and historically Putumayu ( putu "large fruit serving as a container", mayu "river"; in Inga-Kichwa Valsayacu or Walsayaku : walsa " balsa tree ", yaku "water"), in the lower section of the river (in Brazil) Rio Içá , is a river in South America . It flows through the south of Colombia and in parts forms the border with Ecuador and Peru . It finally flows into the Amazon in Brazil near San Antônio do Içá .
The approx. 2060 km long river has a water flow of 8760 m³ / s at the mouth. The Río Putumayo is navigable over a length of 1950 km, making it a more important waterway than the Río Japurá, which runs parallel to the north . It is a transport route primarily for the livestock industry (4% of the catchment area is grassland) and the rubber industry .
River course
The Río Putumayo has its source in the Cordillera Oriental , 7 km north of San Francisco at an altitude of about 2800 m . The upper reaches of the river are located in the Colombian Departamento de Putumayo . The Río Putumayo initially flows mainly in a south-westerly direction. It flows along the southern edge of a basin landscape and passes the small town of San Francisco. After about 30 km the Río Putumayo turns towards east-southeast and cuts through the mountain range of the Cordillera Oriental for a length of 35 km. 10 km west of the town of Villagarzón , it reaches the Amazon basin at the foot of the mountains . He turns to the south-southeast. It takes on several larger tributaries on this section - Río Guineo from the left and Río San Juan , Río Orito and Río Guamuez from the right. At river kilometer 1880 he reached the Ecuadorian border. The Río Putumayo now faces east-southeast and forms the state border between Colombia and Ecuador. At river kilometer 1770 the Río San Miguel meets the Río Putumayo from the right. Between river kilometers 1690 and 420 the river runs along the state border of Peru and Colombia. It flows through Colombian territory up to river kilometer 340. The rest of the river to the mouth is then in Brazil.
