Quinto Ghermandi came from a farming family and discovered his interest in sculpture at an early age. As a child he began to playfully create ceramics , which he formed from clay and burned in a stove made from his family's oven stones. He began his training at the Liceo Artistico in Bologna with Cleto Tomba (1898–1987), later at the Scuola di Ercole Drei and finally at the Accademia di belle Arti di Roma , graduating in 1940.

After the Second World War and four years as a British prisoner of war in North Africa , during which he studied the art of Pablo Picasso and Henry Moore through British magazines , he began making small ceramic sculptures . In the 1950s, he began making abstract sculptures made of welded metal. He was invited to take part in the 1952 Venice Biennale . This was followed by large bronze sculptures, in 1958 he used them to create animal figures for a park in Bologna and in the same year won the Bologna Prize with them . The following year, he was awarded the prize for sculpture in Carrara and won, along with Lynn Chadwick , an international competition for bronze sculptures in Padua . From then on it was represented at all important national and international art events.

He was a participant in the Venice Biennials in 1960 and 1966 and the Quadriennale di Roma in 1965. During the 1960s he had other solo exhibitions and took part in important sculpture exhibitions in Europe , the USA , Japan , Brazil , New Zealand , Iran and Egypt . In 1964, his works were shown in the sculpture department at documenta III in Kassel .

In 1967 and 1969 he won the prize for sculpture at Il Fiorino d'Oro in Florence . His works are part of public and private collections in Europe, particularly in Scandinavia , the United States and Latin America . He created numerous public monuments and fountains around the world.

Quinto Ghermandi was a professor of sculpture at the Accademia di Belle Arti , first in Florence and then in Bologna ; from 1981 to 1984 he held the post of director.

He was married to the painter Romana Spinelli , with whom he had three children: Cristina († 1993), Francesca (draftsman and illustrator) and Martino (editor).
