The Río Camblaya is a river in the Andes high mountains of southern Bolivia .
The river has a total length of 108 kilometers and forms the southern limit of the high mountain region of the Cordillera de Tajsara o Tarachaca . It forms at the confluence of the two rivers Río San Juan del Oro and Río Tumusla and is the natural continuation of the 388 km long Río San Juan del Oro. Downstream, the Río Pilaya forms the continuation of the Río Camblaya, which in turn flows into the Río Pilcomayo and belongs to the river system of the Río de la Plata .
Administratively, the river runs between the Bolivian department of Chuquisaca in the north and the department of Tarija in the south. North of the Río Camblaya is the province of Sud Cinti with the two districts ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Camataqui and Culpina . South of the river is the province of Eustaquio Méndez with the Municipio El Puente and the Municipio San Lorenzo . The river has dug itself deep into the high mountain landscape of the region, the course of the river is rarely wider than 50 meters and its valley is almost uninhabited.
Since 2015, studies on the planning of a reservoir with a large hydropower plant (346 megawatts planned output) have been carried out in the "Carrizal" project with the support of the CAF development bank . As of January 2020, an investment decision has not yet been made.
