The Río Grande is an approximately 163 km long tributary of the Pacific Ocean in the southwest of Peru in the regions of Huancavelica , Ayacucho and Ica .
River course
The Río Grande rises in the Peruvian Western Cordillera at an altitude of about 4300 m , 330 km southeast of the state capital Lima . It flows initially 20 km in a west-northwest and then 10 km in a westerly direction through the mountains. The village of Querco lies at river kilometer 135 above the right bank of the river. The Río Grande now turns towards the south-southwest. At river kilometer 64, the municipality of Río Grande is not far from the left bank of the river. The Río Grande takes on the tributaries of the Río Palpa and Río Vizcas from the left for the following kilometers . About 47 kilometers above the mouth, the Río Nazca also meets the Río Grande from the left. This then flows through the desert-like arid coastal region of Peru and finally flows into the Pacific Ocean. Irrigated agriculture is mainly practiced along the central reaches of the Río Grande. In the lower reaches of the river the river has little water.
Catchment area and hydrology
The catchment area of the Río Grande covers an area of 10,722 km². It borders on that of the Río Ica in the northwest and that of the Río Acarí in the southeast . The river system is mainly fed by precipitation that falls between January and April in the higher elevations of the catchment area.
