Río San Mateo is a river in the department of Cochabamba in Bolivia , which is near the town Villa Tunari with the Río Espíritu Santo for Chapare River combined, which the province and the region has given its name.

course

The Río San Mateo flows along its entire length in the border area between the province of Chapare and the province of Tiraque . It rises at an altitude of 4400  m on Cerro Yurac-Kase on the southern edge of the Serranía de Callejas in the south-western part of the province of Tiraque. From there it flows as a small stream first in a northerly direction and after only five kilometers it crosses the border to the municipality of Villa Tunari in the province of Chapare. From here it flows to the junction with the Río Ivirizu in a north-easterly direction, from km 35 to km 53 the river forms the border between the two provinces of Chapare and Tiraque. At kilometer 41, the still narrow course of the river is crossed by the only bridge on its entire route, a bridge 2.50 meters wide and twenty meters long. At kilometer 53, the San Mateo joins the course of the Río Ivirizu, and flows for the next thirteen kilometers to the town of Villa Tunari in a wide, up to more than one kilometer wide river bed in a largely northerly direction. After a total of 66 kilometers, the Río San Mateo finally joins the Río Espíritu Santo .
