River course

The Río Tarqui has its source in the Cordillera Occidental , 27 km west-southwest of Cuenca , at an altitude of about 3800  m . It initially flows for 20 km in a predominantly east-south-east direction through the mountains and reaches a lowland where agriculture is practiced. The Río Tarqui now flows 12 km in a north-northeast direction. It is largely channeled on this route. The Río Tarqui passes through the villages of Victoria del Portete and Tarqui . The trunk road E59 ( Pasaje- Cuenca) follows the course of the river to Cuenca. The Rio Tarqui cuts through a ridge to the north at river kilometer 18. Eight kilometers above the confluence with the Río Yanuncay, the Río Tarqui reaches the urban area of Cuenca. It turns east for the last few kilometers and runs along the southern outskirts. The catchment area of the Río Tarqui covers around 460 km².
