It is also part of the Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park .

It is located in the natural areas 108- Swabian-Franconian forest mountains and 127- Hohenloher-Haller-level within the natural spatial main units 10- Swabian Keuper-Lias-Land and 12- Neckar- and Tauber-Gäuplatten .

Protection purpose

According to the Protected Area Ordinance, the essential protection purpose is the preservation of the floristically and faunistically, in particular ornithologically valuable, Rößlesmahdsee and the safeguarding of the overall image of the Pfaffenklinge including the fauna and flora, which, together with the Rößlesmahdsee, is a geologically and scientifically interesting example of the competition between the older one, to the Danube leading and the younger, Rhenish drainage system in the area. The younger runoff is characterized by a very strong, constantly progressing erosion in the soft marl layers of the gypsum keuper in the Pfaffenklinge.
