history

The church

Rödigen emerged as a clearing settlement in the 12th to 13th centuries. From this he derives the place name, which was originally Rödchen ( small rod ). The oldest written mention of the place took place later, whereby the 600th anniversary of the village in 2015 refers to a document from 1415. Rödigen belonged to the rule of the Lords of Lobdeburg and passed into the hands of the Wettins in the middle of the 15th century . Between 1455 and 1491 the village was sold to the Teutonic Order and from 1507 to 1809 it belonged to the Lehesten Order . Then it came to the Kingdom of Saxony and in 1815 to the Duchy of Saxony-Weimar .

For centuries, the barren soil hindered an economic upturn. Only a few of the farms were permanently inhabited by farmers or craftsmen. In 1626, only 19 residents survived a plague epidemic.

church

The village church of Rödigen was a branch church of the parish Nerkewitz and probably goes back to a Romanesque hall church that was extended to the east at the beginning of the 17th century. The original baroque furnishings, wooden church tower and mansard roof date from the years 1721 to 1723. From 1963, no services were held for decades and the building fell into disrepair. It was not until 1989 to 1993 that the church interior was extensively renovated and redesigned by setting up a community center on the upper floor.

Bissing Monument

To the west of the village, near the road to Lehesten, is the tomb of the Saxon Premier Lieutenant August Wilhelm von Bissing. It was built in 1858 at the instigation of his widow. She died on the way to the inauguration ceremony and was buried next to her husband. Bissing died at the point where the memorial is located in the battle of Jena in 1806.
