Rudiger Bormann

Rüdiger Bormann (born September 14, 1952 in Bremen ; † January 13, 2013 in Cologne-Marienburg ) was a German physicist and from 2009 to 2013 President of the University of Bayreuth .

Life

Bormann studied physics at the University of Göttingen and received his doctorate in 1979. After a stay of several years at the Department of Applied Physics at Stanford University , he completed his habilitation in 1988 in metal physics at the University of Göttingen. From 1989 to 2009 he was Professor of Metal Physics at the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg , where he headed the Institute for Materials Physics and Technology. In personal union, Bormann was department head since 1989, since 1996 head of the institute for materials technology at the institute for materials research at GKSS-Forschungszentrum Geesthacht GmbH (today Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht - center for materials and coastal research ). As program spokesman in the key technologies research area, he played a key role in the structural and programmatic development of materials research within the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers from 2002 to 2009 . In July 2008 he was elected President of the University by the Senate and University Council of the University of Bayreuth. His term of office began on April 1, 2009.

From February 2004 to April 2010, Bormann was a member of the German Science Council , and from 2006 to 2009 he was deputy chairman of the scientific commission. He was thus also a member of the Strategy Commission of the Excellence Initiative of the federal and state governments, founded in July 2005 .

In March 2011, he appeared in the media across Germany in connection with the plagiarism affair surrounding Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg's doctoral thesis .

Rüdiger Bormann died on January 13, 2013 in a traffic accident in Cologne-Marienburg . During an endurance run with his partner along the Rhine promenade in Cologne-Marienburg, he crossed a track on the Cologne light rail , was hit by a train and died at the scene of the accident.

In March 2018, Prof.-Rüdiger-Bormann-Strasse was dedicated to him in Bayreuth.
