Rafael Barišić

Rafael Barišić OFM (born June 24, 1796 in Oćevija near Vareš , Ottoman Empire , today Bosnia-Herzegovina ; † August 14, 1863 in Široki Brijeg , Ottoman Empire, today Bosnia-Herzegovina) was Apostolic Vicar of Herzegovina .

Life

Rafael Barišić was born in what is now Bosnia . As a youth, Barišić entered the Franciscan order and was accepted into the Croatian Franciscan monastery of Kraljeva Sutjeska on April 16, 1817. After his novitiate , Barišić studied Catholic theology and Catholic philosophy in Italy and was professor there . He was ordained a priest on December 21, 1822 . He taught as a lecturer in Turin and Bologna .

In 1829 Barišić returned to Bosnia. On March 24, 1832, at the age of 35, he was appointed Vicar Apostolic of Bosnia and Titular Bishop of Azotus . The episcopal ordination took place on September 30, 1832. The ecclesiastical office assigned to him, as Apostolic Vicar, took Barišić on December 5, 1832. After years of disputes with the Ottoman authorities, he left the country and became Vicar Apostolic of Herzegovina in 1846/47 .

Rafael Barišić died at the age of 67 in Široki Brijeg .
