Stillfried retired voluntarily from the Austrian army in 1863 and then went on trips to China , North America and Japan . In Japan he settled in Yokohama for a long time and worked there for a long time as a photographer . It is sometimes considered that the British-Venetian photographer Felice Beato gave him photography lessons. In the 1870s Stillfried was one of the leading photographers in Japan. He is known for his portrait photography and, like Felice Beato, he made numerous genre and landscape photos . Such recordings, which showed carefully staged genre scenes with people from foreign cultures as well as pictures of trips to regions and sights that were as unknown as possible, were popular souvenirs on the European market at the time. The mass-produced articles, often of high quality, are rare and valuable today. Careful hand coloring was typical of Stillfried's photos. However, he shared this characteristic of his photographs with those of Beato.

In 1878 Stillfried was elected to the board of directors of the state printing plant in Tokyo , and he was also a kuk court photographer . In 1883 he returned to Vienna.
