Rainald I. (bar)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rainald I the One-Eyed (French: Renaud le Borgne ; † 1149 ) was a Count of Bar , Verdun and Mousson and Vogt of Saint-Pierremont from the House of Scarponnois since 1102/1105 . He was a son of Count Dietrich I of Mousson-Altkirch and the Ermentrude of Burgundy, a daughter of Count Wilhelm I of Burgundy .

Life

In taking possession of his inheritance, Rainald met the open rejection of the citizens of Verdun . He sustained an injury during a violent argument with them that resulted in the loss of an eye. He founded a Premonstratensian abbey near Commercy and mortgaged the castle of Commercy itself in 1106 to the monastery of Saint-Mihiel .

Rainald tried to use the investiture controversy between Emperor Heinrich V and Pope Paschal II for personal goals and captured papal legates. In return, the Bishop of Verdun , Richard de Grandpré, declared that he had lost the castles of Dieulouard and Stenay , which had been given to the Count of Luxembourg . In the resulting war, Bar-le-Duc was captured by Emperor Heinrich V in 1114 and Rainald was put in prison. He was soon released after paying homage to the emperor.

In 1120 the county of Verdun was confiscated by the emperor and given to the Count of Grandpré because Rainald had militarily supported the installation of Heinrich von Blois as Bishop of Verdun. In 1124 Rainald made a contractual waiver of Verdun.

As a distant relative of Godfrey of Bouillon, Rainald raised a claim against the Bishop of Liège to the castle of Bouillon , which he also conquered in 1134. In 1141 the bishop attempted to retake it. Rainald's son, Hugo, died, whereupon he gave up the castle on September 22, 1141.

Together with his sons, Rainald II and Dietrich, and their brother Stephan, Rainald took part in the second crusade since 1147 . He died at sea in 1149 while he was returning home. He was buried in the Abbey of Saint-Mihiel.

He was married to Gisela von Vaudémont, a daughter of Count Gerhard I of Vaudémont . His children were:

  • Hugo († September 1141 in Bouillon)
  • Rainald II († November 25, 1170), successor as Count von Bar
