Rainer Bauböck

Rainer Bauböck (* 1953 in Ried im Innkreis ) is an Austrian sociologist, political scientist and migration researcher.

Bauböck studied sociology and psychology at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate there in 1977 (Dissertation: Housing Policy in Social Democratic Vienna 1919 to 1934 ). He then studied political science as a postgraduate at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna for two years and completed his habilitation in Innsbruck with a thesis on transnational citizenship. From 1986 to 1999 he conducted research and taught as a professor at the Institute for Advanced Studies. Since 2007 he has been Professor of Political Science at the European University Institute in Florence.

He researches normative political theory , comparative studies on citizenships in democracies, European integration, migration, nationalisms and minority rights.

He was visiting scholar and visiting professor at the Bellagio Rockefeller Foundation (2006), at Yale University (2005), at the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona (2003), at the University of Bristol (2002), at the Central European University in Budapest, at the University of Malmö (2000/2001), at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and Princeton University (1998/99) and at the University of Warwick (1990/91). He also taught regularly at the Universities of Vienna and Innsbruck .

He has been a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences since 2013 . He is an honorary doctorate from Malmö University.

Bauböck was President of the Austrian Society for Political Science from 2003 to 2005 . In 2006 he received the European Latsis Prize .
