Rainer Eugen Schlageter

Rainer Eugen Schlageter (born January 28, 1946 in Lörrach ) is a German diplomat and was ambassador to Kazakhstan from 2007 to 2011 .

biography

After graduating from high school in 1966 and completing his basic military service in the armed forces , he studied English and Slavic studies at the University of Heidelberg between 1968 and 1974 , where he passed his first state examination for teaching in 1974 . In 1976 he entered the diplomatic service and after passing the second state examination in 1977 and completing his training as an attaché in 1978, he was employed as a cultural and press officer at the embassy in Afghanistan . From 1981 to 1984 he was head of the press department at the embassy in the Soviet Union before he was employed in the Foreign Office in the department for internal market , agricultural policy and transport policy of the European Union (EU).

In 1987 he was initially head of the press department at the permanent representation to the EU in Brussels and, in 1990, deputy head of the department for external relations of the EU, GATT and Airbus at the Federal Foreign Ministry in Bonn . Thereupon he acted between 1993 and 1995 as head of the German delegation to the EU observer mission over Yugoslavia at the embassy in Croatia and subsequently as head of division for North America , NATO and OSCE in the press and information office of the federal government .

After working from 2000 to 2004 as head of the economic department of the embassy in Japan , he became head of the department for communication , public relations and media (department K) of the Federal Foreign Office. Since 2007, Rainer Schlageter has been the successor to Gebhardt Weiss for four years as Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Kazakhstan. On the occasion of the “Germany in Kazakhstan” year, he succeeded in bringing the United Buddy Bears international exhibition to Central Asia for the first time. 125 bear sculptures in front of the landmark of the Kazakh capital Astana , the Bajterek Tower , advertised tolerance and international understanding for almost four months in the summer of 2010 - and thus for a cosmopolitan Germany.
