Rainer Schmidt (born April 7, 1930 in Rastenburg , East Prussia, today Kętrzyn in Poland; †  June 16, 2020 in Aachen ) was a German specialist in internal medicine and psychosomatic medicine as well as psychotherapist , psychoanalyst and individual psychologist in the tradition of Alfred Adler and also as Active writer . After the Second World War, Schmidt played a key role in the reconstruction of individual psychology in the Federal Republic of Germany. a. as long-time chairman of the German Society for Individual Psychology (DGIP). In addition, he has campaigned nationally and internationally to counteract the separation of individual psychology from psychoanalysis .

Professional background

After graduating from high school, Schmidt began studying the humanities and medicine in Münster in 1950. In 1958 he finished his medical studies with the state examination and doctorate and received his license to practice medicine . He then worked in the deaconess hospital in Witten an der Ruhr, where he also completed his training as a specialist in internal medicine, which he completed in 1964. In 1965 further training as a psychoanalyst and individual psychologist followed, u. a. with Kurt Seelmann , with whom he completed a significant part of his training analysis . In 1970 he was given the additional title of "psychoanalyst" and set up as a medical psychotherapist in his own practice in Aachen. From then on he campaigned for individual psychology, u. a. in his function as training analyst, supervisor , lecturer and long-term medical and scientific director of the Alfred Adler Institute Aachen-Cologne , which he co-founded. From 1974 to 1987 he was chairman of the German Society for Individual Psychology. In addition to his medical, psychotherapeutic and scientific orientation, Schmidt also repeatedly worked in the literary field, including a. as a theater critic in the Aachen literature office and as a writer. In addition, as a board member of the Arno-Holz-Gesellschaft in Kętrzyn (formerly Rastenburg), he was committed to understanding and cultural exchange between Poland and Germany.

In 1911 there was a break between Adler and Freud , which resulted in a decade-long separation of individual psychology from psychoanalysis. Based on Erwin Ringel , Schmidt advocated the thesis that individual psychology is a depth psychology and, especially in the 1980s, at national and international congresses and in publications, advocated that individual psychologists should return to their z. In this context he emphasized above all that without the concept of the unconscious coined by Freud, many phenomena such as B. the cultural catastrophe of National Socialism remained incomprehensible.
