Raja 1918 , Russian Граница 1918, is a Finnish-Russian feature film directed by Lauri Törhönen in 2007 . It describes the outcome of the Finnish civil war after the fall of the Russian Empire in 1918.
action
Spring 1918: First Lieutenant Carl von Munck was an officer in the " Whites " during the Finnish Civil War and as such had successfully fought the "Reds". After the defeat of the "Reds" in the Battle of Tampere , von Munck was promoted to captain by Commander-in-Chief Carl Gustaf Emil von Mannerheim and assigned to an outpost where he was supposed to guard the emerging border between the Soviet Union and the Republic of Finland . The primary school teacher Maaria Eleonoora Lintu, who is engaged to the “red” Heikki Kiljunen, hides him from the “whites” and even secretly spies on him, is at his side to cope with the administrative work. Carl von Munck very soon succumbs to it, without knowing what he has gotten himself into.
At the same time, the Soviet troops begin to clear their territory of certain ethnic groups (Finns, Swedes, Jews) and to drive them to Finland. At first, von Munck succeeded in arranging transit traffic across the border by mutual agreement with the Soviets; a paternal friendship develops between him and the Soviet border commander Major Gentsch. In order not to be overheard by the other Soviet soldiers and the suspicious inspector, they will speak in German from now on. Gentsch is a former Russian landowner who was expropriated by the Soviets, but was transferred to the border for lack of officers. Although he professes Bolshevism , he still sympathizes with the Tsar, whose murder (July 17, 1918) he considers a horrific crime.
Gentsch unrestrainedly enriched himself with the refugees and tried to persuade Carl von Munck to do the same. However, he is only interested in Maaria. Despite the close friendship with Gentsch, the refugee issue is spiraling out of control. The Finns refuse to take in other ethnic groups besides their own people and either put anyone they suspect of being a “red” or a Russian spy in custody (“quarantine”) or shoot them on the spot. This creates a spiral of violence that develops an uncontrollable dynamic of its own with the increase in refugee flows, so that Carl von Munck, who has meanwhile been promoted to major, is ordered by his superiors to liquidate everything and everyone.
production
Raja 1918 marks the sequel to Heikki Ylikanga's much discussed book The Road to Tampere . The interior shots were shot in the Lenfilm studios in Saint Petersburg . The film structures are by Sergei Kokowkin , the costumes by Marjatta Nissinen . The film costs amounted to 2.1 million euros. The film had its cinema premiere on November 30, 2007 in Finland. In 2007, the film grossed 382,151 euros in Finland.
