Location of Sokuluk Rajon in Kyrgyzstan

Alamüdün ( Kyrgyz Аламүдүн ) is a Rajon ( district ) in the Tschüi region in northern Kyrgyzstan . According to a census from 2009 , 148,032 people live in the Rajon, the main town of which is Lebedinovka , an eastern suburb of the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek .

location

The Rajon with an area of 1503 square kilometers is located in the north of the country and borders the capital Bishkek. This is administratively detached from the Tschüi area and forms a separate area, but large parts of the suburbs and the area around the city belong to the Alamüdün Rajon, including the main town Lebedinovka in the greater Bishkek area. With a north-south extension of about 90 kilometers, the Rajon extends from the northern foothills of the Kyrgyz Mountains in the south to the border with Kazakhstan in the north. The Sokuluk district joins in the west, the capital Bishkek and the Ysyk-Ata district in the east .

The south of the Rajon is hardly populated due to the mountains there. With the 4895 meter high peak Semjonow-Tjan-Schanski the highest mountain of the Kyrgyz mountains lies in the Rajon Alamüdün. In addition, with the Korona Peak and the Swobodnaja Peak Korea, two other mountains belong to the Alamüdün Rajon, which are among the highest in the region. The source of the Alamüdün river , which is part of the Tschüi river system , is also located in the Kyrgyz mountains. Part of the mountainous landscape in the south of the Rajon is under special protection as the Ala Artscha National Park . The national park is a popular destination for tourists and residents of Bishkek, and hiking and ice climbing are popular activities , among others . In individual areas in the extreme northern foothills of the mountains there are also offers for skiing . In the north of the Kyrgyz Mountains, the greater Bishkek area adjoins, while the border region with Kazakhstan is mainly agricultural.

traffic

The immediate vicinity of Bishkek ensures a good connection of the Rajon to long-distance traffic and a comparatively efficient infrastructure in the vicinity of the capital. In the northern and southern parts of the Rajon, however, the transport infrastructure is less well developed. The Kyrgyz section of European route 40 , which connects Calais in France via Bishkek with the Kazakh Ridder , runs for a short distance in an east-west direction through the Rajon. The route of the Lugovoi – Bishkek railway also runs through the Alamüdün district.

Others

The most sensational event in the recent history of the Rajon was the arrest of the former Kyrgyz President Almasbek Atambayev in the town of Koy Tash, south of Bishkek in Alamüdün Rajon. On August 7, 2019, special forces tried Atambayev on charges of corruption and complicity in crimes However, supporters of the ex-president prevented him from arresting his home in Koy Tash. 80 people were injured in the violent clashes between the officials and Atambayev's supporters, and one soldier from the special forces was killed. On August 8, the officials finally succeeded in arresting Atambayev.
