Rakovica - town center |
Rakovica is a municipality in Karlovac County in Croatia . It has 2,387 inhabitants (2011 census). The Barać caves (Croat. Baraćeve špilje ) are located on the territory of the municipality of Rakovica .
The community attracted attention in October 1871 when Eugen Kvaternik broke with the line of his Croatian nationalist right-wing party and propagated an uprising against the government of Austria-Hungary , which did not meet its maximum demands for complete independence of his part of the country. About 200 gunmen took part in the Rakovica revolt in which Kvaternik was killed.
The village of Rakovica, which used to be mainly agricultural, has also developed into a stopover for tourists on their way to the Plitvice Lakes National Park , and offers private accommodation as an alternative to the hotels near the lakes.
The city's coat of arms shows a red cancer on a yellow shield.
