Ralf Kessen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ralf Kessen (born September 7, 1960 ) is a former German soccer player and later coach who, in addition to many years of activity in Duisburg soccer, played 19 second division games for FC Remscheid . His twin brother Jörg Kessen was also a professional footballer.

Player career

In the 1980s, the midfielder Ralf Kessen played together with his brother Jörg at the traditional Hochfeld club Duisburger FV 08 . With this they competed in the then fourth class association league. From the DFV both moved in 1987 to the neighboring MSV Duisburg , which after many years of membership in the top two divisions only entered the third division league. Ralf Kessen was regularly called up there, but did not take a permanent seat. After the team failed in the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga in 1988, the MSV succeeded in returning to professional football in 1989; by then he had played 40 league games with seven goals. Unlike his brother Jörg, he left the club after promotion. He remembered his appearance in Duisburg in an encounter against the amateurs of Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the 1987/88 season, during which he scored the winning goal and was sent off the same minute.

He found a new employer in FC Remscheid , with whom he was promoted to the second division in the 1990/91 season, as in Duisburg. Due to the merger with the system of the former GDR, the 2nd Bundesliga 1991/92 was played exceptionally in a north and a south relay, with Remscheid being part of the northern relay. Kessen made his professional debut on July 23, 1991 in a 2: 5 opening defeat against Blau-Weiß 90 Berlin and was already 30 years old. Then he was initially a regular player, but missed parts of the season and ultimately posted 19 missions with one goal of his own. During the summer break, he said goodbye to Remscheid after he had remained in the league by a narrow margin and then did not return to professional football.

Trainer and functionary career

From 1996 on, the brothers Ralf and Jörg Kessen were equal trainers at their former club Duisburger FV 08. With this they competed in the association league. After his brother left in 1998, Ralf Kessen remained loyal to the DFV for some time and then took over the regional division Weseler SV together with Claus Gebauer . With this he reached the runner-up in the sixth class league at the end of the 2001/02 season. Later he was active again near his sporting home and trained TuRa 88 Duisburg .

In 2009 he was employed as an assistant coach at the former Bundesliga club KFC Uerdingen 05 , after he had previously been the sports director there. With the then sixth class appearing club, he made it to the NRW League in 2011. During the 2011/12 season, his last with the KFC, he also served briefly as an interim coach, but did not find a permanent job as head coach.

In February 2014 Jörg Kessen was introduced as the new sports director at Duisburger SV 1900 and shortly afterwards hired his twin brother Ralf as a coach. Both brothers are also members of the traditional team of MSV Duisburg.
