Ralph T. Niemeyer

Ralph T. Niemeyer (actually Ralph Thomas Niemeyer ; * 9. October 1969 in Berlin ) is a German author , journalist , documentary filmmaker , film producer , because of fraud convicted financial advisor and politician ( SPD , formerly The Left ).

Life

education

Niemeyer attended the Catholic primary school in Wachtberg - Niederbachem near Bonn from 1976 to 1980 . From 1980 to 1989 he graduated from the Otto Kühne School of Education in Bad Godesberg (Bonn). He studied philosophy and economics in California and German and philosophy in Bonn . Nothing is known about a degree.

After the fall of the Wall he employed the successor to SED Secretary General Honecker, Egon Krenz , to initiate business with the East.

Film producer and journalist

Financed by the parliamentary group Die Linke and its party-affiliated Rosa Luxemburg Foundation , Niemeyer produced hardly any commercially profitable documentaries that were used for agitation : about Michail Gorbachev (1991) and Nelson Mandela (1994) as well as Argentina (2003) and Venezuela (2004). Niemeyer was one of the executive producers of the feature film The Consul of Bordeaux, completed in 2011, about the life of the Portuguese Consul General Aristides de Sousa Mendes , who saved the lives of 30,000 people, including 10,000 Jews . To mark the anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear disaster , Niemeyer produced the documentary Hibakusha , together with the Bundestag member and energy policy spokeswoman for the Left, Dorothée Menzner , which addresses the consequences of radiation and deals with the question of a nuclear phase-out in Japan.

Since 2004, Niemeyer has been accredited as a journalist with the German newspaper Junge Welt , the British magazine EU Reporter and the magazine New Europe in Brussels.

Prohibition to practice and criminal record for investment fraud

In May 1996 Niemeyer was convicted of fraud in 46 cases by the Cologne Regional Court . The judges banned him from working as a financial advisor for five years . At the time, Niemeyer tried to escape the trial and its impending condemnation by fleeing to Turkey. He was arrested at Antalya Airport , where he was accompanied by his then girlfriend Sahra Wagenknecht . According to the Cologne Public Prosecutor Regine Appenrodt, Niemeyer has a criminal record because he was sentenced to three years and four months in prison for capital investment fraud.

Marriage and children

Niemeyer was married to the German politician Sahra Wagenknecht from 1997 to 2013 . There were no children from the marriage. He is the father of three sons and one daughter.

politics

Niemeyer was originally a member of the SPD , but resigned because of its course under the chairmen Engholm and Lafontaine . In January 2011 he became a member of the Die Linke party , initially in the Heidelberg-Rhein-Neckar district association in Baden-Württemberg , and from June 2012 in Lower Saxony . On May 7, 2013 Ralph T. Niemeyer was nominated as a direct candidate for the 18th German Bundestag in constituency 26 (Wittmund, Friesland, Wilhelmshaven) . He also represented the Left Party on the state list.

In March 2017, after having resigned from the left and re-accepted as a member of the SPD in Baden-Württemberg, at the state party congress in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Niemeyer was elected to the hopeless 39th place on the state list for the 2017 federal election without a constituency for one To have had direct candidacy.
