Ramón Subercaseaux Vicuña belonged to a wealthy and respected family. His grandfather, the doctor Francisco Subercaseaux Breton, originally came from Dax in France. After moving to Chile, he managed an estate and also worked as a mining entrepreneur. Ramón Subercaseaux Vicuña's parents were the merchant Ramón Subercaseaux Mercado and his wife Magdalena Vicuña Aguirre. The father ran a commercial building in Valparaíso and was also a member of the Chilean Senate from 1840 . Ramón Subercaseaux Vicuña was born in 1854 as the youngest of 13 children.

After finishing school he first studied law from 1871 to 1874 at the Universidad de Chile in Santiago de Chile . In addition, he developed diverse musical interests. So he learned to play the violin and was one of the co-founders of the music association Club Musical , from which an orchestra and a male choir emerged. He also turned - initially as an autodidact - to painting and drawing caricatures. He later received painting lessons from the German painter Ernst (Ernesto) Kirchbach , who was director of the Santiago de Chile art academy (Academia de Pintura) from 1869 to 1876.

In 1874 he traveled to Europe for the first time. Here he studied masterpieces of art in the original, especially in Paris and Rome. The painters Pascal Adolphe Dagnan-Bouveret , Luc-Oliver Merson , Giovanni Boldini and John Singer Sargent belonged to his Parisian circle of friends . Sargent in particular had a lasting influence on the style of Ramón Subercaseaux Vicuña. The portraits that Sargent made of Ramón Subercaseaux Vicuña and his wife (portrait of Madame Ramón Subercaseaux ) bear witness to the friendship of the two painters .

Subercaseaux Vicuña married Amalia Errázuriz Urmeneta in 1879, sister of the painter José Tomás Errázuriz . From this marriage there were six children. These include the painter and Benedictine monk Pedro Subercaseaux Errázuriz , the diplomat Luis Subercaseaux Errázuriz and the archbishop Juan Subercaseaux Errázuriz .

In 1880 Ramón Subercaseaux Vicuña stayed in Rome, where he attended both painting courses at the academy and in the studio of the Andalusian painter José García Ramos . At the same time, he began his political career in his Chilean homeland. Since 1876 he was deputy deputy (diputado suplente) for Angol . In his pictorial work, numerous cityscapes were created in the 1880s, especially of Valparaíso , which are among the main works of his artistic work. This clearly shows the influence of French Impressionism . In addition, Subercaseaux Vicuña founded the magazine Revista de Artes y Letras together with friends in 1884 .

In 1897 he took part as the official representative of Chile in the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the throne of the British Queen Victoria in London. From 1906 to 1912 he was a Senator (Senador) for Arauco in the Chilean Senate. Under President Juan Luis Sanfuentes, he also held the post of Foreign, Culture and Settlement Minister from December 23, 1915 to April 27, 1916. After stations as Ambassador of Chile in Berlin and Vienna, Ramón Subercaseaux Vicuña took up the post of Chilean Ambassador to the Holy See in 1924 . He remained in this position until 1930 and made numerous cityscapes in Rome, including pictures of the Arch of Titus and the Piazza del Popolo , as well as interior views of churches such as St. Peter's Basilica .
