Raoul III. de Tosny († around 1126), Seigneur de Conches-en-Ouche , was an Anglo-Norman nobleman from the Tosny family .

Life

In the war between the two surviving sons of William the Conqueror , Raoul III decided to support the younger brother Henry I "Beauclerc" , the recently crowned King of England . After the death of his father Raoul II. De Tosny in 1102, he crossed the English Channel to take over his father's property in England. He merged with Heinrich and thus achieved marriage with Adelise, daughter and heiress of the Anglo-Saxon Count Waltheof II, Earl of Northumbria , and Judith von Lens , niece of Wilhelm the Conqueror.

From 1104 Raoul accompanied Heinrich on his campaign to conquer Normandy . After the Battle of Tinchebray (1106), the campaign led to the imprisonment of Duke Robert Curthose and his replacement by Henry, so England and Normandy were reunited under one ruler, as previously under William I. The support of the Lords of Tosny is during the Revolt of the barons of Eastern Normandy against Henry I in 1118 and 1119 confirmed: Raoul did not join the rebels. However, if one follows the narrative of, his posture seems to have become wavering. The leader of the rebellious barons (Raoul's uncle Amaury III. De Montfort ) declared King Ludwig VI. of France that it was necessary to attack Normandy in the south-east, since Raoul III. them will. Amaury assured that Raoul would join the royal troops with his vassals and open four castles for them: Conches , Acquigny , Portes and Tosny . In the autumn of 1119, Ludwig VI decided. to intervene, but the following events showed that Raoul III. the French would not support, as Amaury had suspected. Raoul II de Gaël, one of Henry's followers, suspected Raoul III of trying to capture him. On the advice of Henry I, he granted him Pont-Saint-Pierre and Val de Pîtres to ensure his loyalty.

In 1123/24 Amaury de Montfort rose again against the king. Raoul III. de Tosny remained loyal.
