content
Most of the time, the film is commented on by Tsarevich Alexej Nikolajewitsch and begins with a brief flashback to the youth of the Siberian monk Grigory Rasputin , in which he already shows clairvoyant powers.
As an adult, the Holy Virgin Mary appears to him. This orders that he should travel to Saint Petersburg . The strange personality will soon be the talk of the town because of his dissolute lifestyle, but also because of his unusual healing powers. This is also the reason that he will soon be called to the court of the tsars, where he will temporarily cure Alexei, who is suffering from hemophilia . Rasputin soon enjoyed the tsarina's trust above all - despite his anything but celibate or otherwise celibate lifestyle, as he was only too happy to approve of alcohol. But this also makes him many enemies and envious people.
He is being monitored by the secret police and when these gentlemen discover that he has even seduced the tsar's cousin, he is expelled from the country, contrary to the tsar's protests. When the tsarevich fell seriously ill again, it was Rasputin who was able to give him relief by means of telephone calls, and the tsarina ordered him back to court. He continues to lead a dissolute lifestyle, and it is even rumored among the people that he also had a relationship with the Tsarina.
The First World War begins and the Tsar sends millions of Russians to war and to their death. Due to wrong advice given by the Tsarina in a letter, he and his troops turn north instead of south and suffer painful losses on the front. Now the tsarina begins to doubt Rasputin's ability as well. The people are suffering and are getting more and more revolted against Rasputin and the tsarist family, above all the tsarina.
There was a scandal in a pub that evening when he was drunk and danced wildly, fell staggering to the floor, got up with difficulty and then stumbled over to a table and kisses one of the ladies present, the Tsarina herself, on the mouth. To a young man who identifies himself as the tsarina's nephew and wants to reprimand him, he says that the people in his family have pretty faces, but that he himself would prefer women. Angrily, he wants to know whether he is trying to claim that he has a relationship with the tsarina. Rasputin evades, saying that the tsarina would kiss his hand. Shouting that he is a tall man, he climbs up on one of the tables, dances, pulls up his robe and exposes himself in front of everyone.
Having had enough of the scandals, Rasputin is lured into a trap by advisors to the Tsar with the help of the Tsarina's favorite nephew, Felix Yusupov (who had already reprimanded Rasputin in the nightspot). Rasputin is called that his wife Irina is seriously ill and that he should definitely come. He refuses at first, but then comes. He is entertained with poisoned lard rings and poisoned wine. However, neither has any effect on him. On the contrary, it demands even more wine. Now he is to be shot. When he is apparently dead and the tsarina's nephew bends over him, he comes to and strangles him so that he can only be freed with the help of a co-conspirator. Rasputin even manages to get to the exit, pursued by his tormentors. Here, however, he finally collapses dead after being shot several times.
Subsequently, the tsarist family was arrested during the course of the war and finally shot, commented on by the tsarevich. As Rasputin had predicted, they did not survive him for two years.
