The film tells the story of two families who emigrated from Germany to the USA at the same time after the First World War. The script is based on the novel The Master Butchers Singing Club by Louise Erdrich .

action

The young master butcher Fidelis Waldvogel promises his dying friend in a trench of the First World War that he will look after his pregnant fiancée Eva and marries her after he has returned to his Swabian homeland. Since there is neither space nor work for Fidelis on his parents' estate, he emigrates to America and promises to bring his wife and child to join them.

At around the same time, the circus artist Delphine from Hamburg is trying to make a new start in the USA with her alcoholic father, the circus clown Robert . Fidelis initially sells sausage products brought from Germany in New York City in order to be able to afford the train journey inland. With this money he gets to Argus in North Dakota .

After their arrival in the USA, Delphine and Robert unsuccessfully introduce themselves to a circus, where they meet the Lakota acrobat Cyprian. He offers them accommodation on his farm near Argus. Delphine and Cyprian are employed by a circus and soon get closer. Delphine later discovers that Cyprian is gay and sees her as a little sister. They leave Robert, who is now abstinent, alone to go on tour with the circus. Robert discovers a whiskey depot in the basement of the house and starts drinking again. When intoxicated, he gets hallucinations. When he accidentally locks a woman and a man in the basement after a feast, he escapes because he believes their cries for help are the voices of devilish demons. When Delphine and Cyprian return, they discover the bodies and Robert is arrested by the sheriff.

Fidelis initially works for the Polish butcher Kozka, where he also makes his smoked sausages according to a secret family recipe. Soon he is able to set up his own butcher shop. His sausage products are very popular with customers and so his wife Eva and her son and his aunt Lore can soon follow suit. Eva helps her husband in the butcher's shop and they have a second son. Lore doesn’t help in business or household chores.

Cyprian rejoins the circus, Delphine stays behind to take care of her father. When Delphine comes into the Waldvogel family's shop, the two young women become friends. They are united by their origins. Eva offers Delphine a job in the store, which makes it financially possible for Delphine to bribe the sheriff to release her father. He too now works for the Waldvogel family. Longing for his old homeland, Fidelis founds a male choir with some men from the city .

Eva becomes terminally ill; the doctor can only prescribe morphine for pain relief. Delphine takes care of Eva and takes care of the children. Eva asks Delphine to look after the family after her death. Fidelis expelled Lore after Eva's death because of her intrigues and she returned to Germany. Delphine and Fidelis get closer and closer and eventually get married. Both look after Fidelis' children lovingly until he dies in a car accident a few months later.

Delphine and Robert turn the butcher shop into a well-run American fast food restaurant serving hamburgers .

Reviews

"To depict that skillfully, with great feeling, but not to drown in lard and not in well-intentioned stilting and in this case an overly clear reference to the current immigration situation - that is what distinguishes the" Club of Singing Butchers "and is on television, in public legal especially, not at all common. Which does not mean that this is a film that breaks with the conventions of local television films. He does his job very well and fits perfectly into the holiday program of the first. "
